Simple Tips to Help with Acne
Keep your face clean – Washing your face two times a day is optimal. Over washing and scrubbing your face can actually irritate your skin and can cause acne to worsen. Use a mild soap and warm water to gently cleanse your face and dry off by patting your face with a soft, clean towel.
Try not to touch your face – It’s easier said than done but not rubbing or touching your face can really help. Your hands can transfer harmful bacteria to your face so the less often you touch your face the better!
Stay out of the sun – Tanning causes skin damage and can irritate your skin. And exposure to the sun actually increases oil production in your skin. So a day in the sun might feel like it’s drying out your skin but it’s actually making your acne worse.
Don’t pop or squeeze pimples – You might be tempted to eliminate a whitehead by popping it but that can push bacteria deeper into your skin and cause the area to become redder and more swollen. This can mean it takes even longer for the pimple to heal and may cause a scab or, worse yet, a scar! Read our acne blog post about natural acne scar treatment.
Drink plenty of water – Not only does water keep you hydrated, it also flushes out toxins and delivers nutrients throughout your body helping you fight acne from the inside out.
What Research Is Being Done on Acne Treaments & Medicine?
Medical researchers are working on new drugs to treat acne and adult acne, particularly topical antibiotics to replace some of those in current use. As with many other types of bacterial infections, doctors are finding that, over time, the bacteria that are associated with acne are becoming resistant to treatment with certain antibiotics. Research is also being conducted by industry leaders on the potential side effects of isotretinoin and the long-term use of medicines used for treating acne.
Scientists are working on other means of treating acne. For example, researchers are studying the biology of sebaceous cells and testing a laser on laboratory animals to treat acne by disrupting sebaceous glands. Scientists are also studying the treatment of androgenic disorders, including acne, in men by inhibiting an enzyme that changes testosterone to a more potent androgen.
